Interesting day of excavating lesser known stories of Sungei Road Thieves' Market for 4D today.. It was my second trip there for the Singapore Diary Project! Finally plucked the courage to ask the vendors for a short video interview with them... Even though many were shy and declined, thank God some were friendly, brave and nice enough to help me out with the project.
Went back to the same super friendly auntie Mom and I met on our first trip to the market for the project, and of course she was willing to help out. It turned out that she had been interviewed 3 times by other students for school projects last year too! Haha.. Good to know that there are other people in the younger generation who are interested in raising awareness about this hidden gem of culture in SG!
Made new friends with another interviewee, Ann, a friendly 2-week-old vendor who works as a nurse at TTS by day, and sells her clothes and accessories by night at Sungei. And also got to chat and joke a little with the other Malay uncles beside her stall. I've come to realise that they are actually pretty supportive towards students who seek to research findings about the market through them.. despite their scary demeanour!
All in all, it was an exceptional experience, and I thank God for my mom's super giving and helpful spirit for accompanying me there for the 2nd time despite feeling quite unwell! Really hope + pray that this project will come to fruition as a meaningful, intimate and unique one for Singaporeans to know more about their country..
